Wednesday Morning, February 2, 2011

According to Gabby, today is Groundhog Day! And, Jim just confirmed it.

Did he see his shadow? Seems the weather station keeps showing scenes of snow all over everywhere so likely not?

I am going to back track to this past Sunday, January 30, 2011.

I spent the afternoon with the Lee's and Jim busied himself here at the camper looking for leaks and doing a little more caulking.

Hillary called and offered for me to join the Lee Family on a trip to Ft. Zachary Taylor Beach / Ft. Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, which is one of the areas the "Sculpture Key West" is located.  This sculpture show lasts through April 15, so we are hoping we will get to go to one of the other sites before we go home - the other sites are at the Key Wet Garden Club at West Martello Tower and the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden.

This walkabout at Ft. Zach is wonderful for the children, wide open spaces, along a beach wall, with a view of the waters and sailboats as well as the most interesting sculptures.

Before I left for this adventure with the Lee's, Jim and I did a walkabout over to the KOA Camp which is virtually next door to us here at Lazy Lakes.pr

A walk up the road from Lazy Lakes, up to Hwy 1, then a short jaunt down a pathway and down another long street to the KOA provides a good little walk and always fun.

As is often the case, and especially with the Art Show, a picture is worth a thousand words.

This is the road from US 1 down to the Lazy Lakes Campground.  US 1 is in front of us as Jim and I are on our walk to the KOA on Sunday Morning.

Entrance to the KOA Campground.  The sign reads "Welcome to the Southernmost KOA"

Inside the KOA Campground, at the boat docks and boating store, this is a great view of the fishing bridge that Lazy Lakes Campers use to fish off of....... Again, as mentioned previously, US 1 runs parallel to the fishing bridge (other side of bridge from this view)

This huge tent like structure is the Pub at the KOA.  This is where we often come for happy hour after the horseshoe games on Monday.

The tent camping area at the KOA.  This area is marked 'red tent' - last year, when Jim and I walked around this area, I made the comment "why are there only red tents supposed to be in this area?"  Jim could not believe my vunerableness (is that a word!)  He said the Red, or Yellow, or Blue Tent areas were marked in such a manner to designate for the office which area you may be camping in...

This is a beach area at the KOA.  Very pretty, I thought.  And, again, that is the fishing bridge in the background.

I thought the berries on this palm were pretty.  I keep looking around for another banana bloom, as the one I saw last year was so stunning, and yet, to find another banana bloom.  I'm going to keep looking.

This sign appears as you are driving out of the KOA.  It is a checkoff list, reading "antenna down" "steps up" "sewer cap on" "wife in car"

On the way back from the KOA, this is the stretch of US 1 between the camps.  I took this photograph at the KOA road, the bus station cover you see on the back left of the picture is at the entrance to Lazy Lakes.  As it was still Sunday Morning, the traffic on US 1 had not picked up just yet.

Salt flats or shallows that are on each side of the road travelling down to the Lazy Lake Camp.

At Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park as we are about to start our Art Tour Walk.

This piece of art is entitled "Angel" - the metal sculpture is designed like a teapot with angel wings.  Hillary is on the left, Lily then Gabby inside the 'pot'

This is the water view as we strolled along the art walk.  Not a bad way to spend a Sunday Afternoon! The Island in the background is Sunset Key.  This key has just been developed over the last 12 years or so.  Very upscale!

This very large piece of driftwood needed to be climbed.  That is Gabby climbing and Lily and Hillary walking by.  Gabby mentioned that the driftwood should have been part of the Art Show and I agree.

This piece of art, the rock, is described as "Hard Place" and further, 'this large breathing granite rock was selected by the artist and placed on location overlooking Key West's main shipping channel.  Get out your FM radio and tune in to the frequency posted."  We didn't see a frequency on the sign, and we did not have a FM radio.

Another water view from the walkabout.  You can see the pathway that meanders through this area, taking you by each display of art.

These metal 'frames' are described as "Living Room" art

The Lee Family having a little fun in the 'Living Room'

Unlike some of the other art work, this huge sculpture could be seen for a long distance away as we traversed the path.  Entitled "Photosynthesis"  the structure is made from wooden boards, and somewhat braided together at different spots.  We were able to walk under this structure, looking up through the boards to the sky.  The boards were left bare at the bases and the top area was painted blue.

This is looking up and through "Photosynthesis" as we walked through.  Hillary mentioned that if we were really quiet, we could hear the 'creek' of the boards, and we did.  This was a great sculpture.

Every walkabout has to include a snack break.  We found an empty picnic table on the beach side of Ft. Zach and everyone took a little rest.  Lily has her head in her Dad's lap.  I would like to mention Lily's shoes.  When we started out from the Lee Home, Lily had on a very practical pair of shoes for a walkabout.  I think she found these black flats of Gabby's in the car on the way to Ft. Zach.  So, this was the shoes she wanted to wear.  Not much changing to Lily's mind,  once made up, so Lily plodded around in these shoes, often losing them, stepping on fire ants, etc.  Made for an interesting walk for the Padster.

The plaque describing Ft. Zach - maybe with a magnifier you could read it!

Gathering of Lazy Lakes Campers at the KOA on Monday Afternoon, January 31. That's Jim at the head of the table with his new hair.

The right side of the KOA Happy Hour Lazy Lakes Campers.  You can see Chuck in the green shirt (our neighbor to the left of us at camp) and then JoAnn and Charlie.  JoAnn and Charlie are from Canada and it was their spot we were on last year when they were called home unexpectedly for a daughter's illness.  Daughter is fine and Charlie and JoAnn are great fun.  Charlie is one of our entertainers as he plays guitar and sings.

Another photo of the KOA happy hour crowd.  That is Jerry in the brown stripe shirt and his wife, Char, in the blue shirt to his left.  Jerry is our banjo picking entertainer.  Char is talking to Terry, that's Lorraine in the pink, and, of course, Jim again, at the head of the table.  It worked out that Jim was sitting at one end of the table and I was at the opposite end.  During our drink time, I got up to go tell Jim something and Charlie insisted I sit back down.  He played 'pass it on' telling his wife, JoAnn, to pass on to the next person, to pass on to Jim that "Karen says Hi"  Really cute and the message lasted until about two people from Jim and that person just hollers out "Jim, Karen says Hi"
